House Speaker Thomas S. Foley’s dog, Alice, a Belgian Malinot shepherd nearly 17 years old, had to be put to sleep over the weekend after being diagnosed with abdominal cancer, Foley’s office said Tuesday.

Alice had been a familiar sight in the Capitol since 1981, when Foley (D-Wash.) became Democratic majority whip. The dog arrived uncollected at New York’s Kennedy Airport in the early ‘70s and was adopted by Foley and his wife, who were visiting the airport.
