About 40 people, including religious leaders and political activists, were arrested Wednesday outside the Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles in a protest against U.S. support of the government of El Salvador.
About 200 placard-carrying demonstrators rallied outside the Temple Street entrance to the building, while a group that included actor Martin Sheen, Father Luis Olivares and several other local Catholic priests and nuns linked arms in front of the doors and refused orders to move aside.
When the demonstrators refused to yield, officers in riot helmets led them away and cited them for trespassing.
