San Diego Newspaper Guild members at the San Diego Union-Tribune held a noon demonstration Thursday in front of the newspapers’ offices to protest a two-year labor dispute.

Union members have worked without a labor contract since 1987 and have repeatedly accused the company of failing to bargain in good faith. Earlier this year, the National Labor Relations Board charged management with 37 violations of federal labor laws. The allegations are currently the subject of an administrative hearing.

In a full-page ad that ran in the Reader newspaper Thursday, the Guild said advertising rates at the papers have climbed by 17%, and subscription rates will increase by 11.8% in January, while their earnings continue to decline.

Talks have turned increasingly bitter, and state labor officials have assigned a mediator to monitor the negotiations.

Meanwhile, some writers and photographers continue to protest the lack of progress in the negotiations by withholding bylines and credit lines from stories and photos.
