Four inmates who participated in a July 4 riot at the El Cajon jail were placed on probation Thursday and given credit for time served.

Given three years’ probation were Lavalle Porter, 19; John Lewis, 19; Scott Adams, 23, and Gilbert Crook, 37, all from San Diego.

The incident sent several prisoners to the hospital and charges were filed against 15 inmates, all of them black. Defense attorneys said that was discriminatory because white inmates who also rioted were not charged.

On Nov. 16, Porter, Adams and Lewis pleaded guilty to battery, and only Crook entered a plea to rioting.

Charges against two other defendants were dismissed in a preliminary hearing, and others have pleaded guilty or no contest to varying charges.

The only co-defendant left is fugitive Mark Andrews, 21, who has a $5,000 warrant out for his arrest.
