Junior High Dropout Problem Burdens Los Angeles Schools
In response to “Dropout Problem Burdens Junior Highs,” Metro, Nov. 28:
The dropout rate could be decreased in the Los Angeles Unified School District if Deputy Supt. Sidney Thompson and the Board of Education would put their money where their mouths are, i.e., provide more counselors per school, rather than the present allotment of one per 1,450 students. At Wright Junior High School we have had two counselors plus the assistant principal of student counseling for the past two years. We currently have one counselor for 900 students.
As the myriad of student problems increases, the number of counselors decreases. How can we possibly hope to decrease the dropout rate? Our principal requested an additional counselor this year, but was refused by the powers that be.
