Your article today about Janis and Harry Kerker was very good--and important. Since your figures show only 13% of Californian families are the “traditional” type, people need to know they still do exist. We traditional families sometimes get left out these days.
Janis Kerker’s fragmented days and frustrations are common to all of us who choose to stay home. I have to say, though, she is a lot better off financially than many of us are. We don’t have a home in La Canada Flintridge, nor hired help for the housework. We didn’t leave full-blown careers to stay at home. We are the everyday clerks, secretaries. Our husbands don’t have high-paying or professional careers, either.
But we’re not living at the poverty level, by any means. And Harry is right. Living on one income, especially in the L.A. area, can be tough (no matter what your income or life style).
