Nation IN BRIEF : VIRGINIA : $33-Million Fine Hits Striking Union

A judge in Lebanon, Va., fined the United Mine Workers union $33.4 million for its strike against Pittston Coal Co. The fine more than doubled the total of state penalties assessed against the union during the 8-month-old walkout. Among the penalties for 150 contempt of court violations was a $4-million levy for the union’s four-day takeover in September of a Pittston coal preparation plant.
