A woman was convicted Wednesday of second-degree murder in the fatal shootings of two neighbors, including a 6-year-old girl.

Leeann Welch, 32, also was convicted of three counts of attempted murder. She faces a maximum state prison term of 48 years to life when she returns to court in Compton on Jan. 9 for sentencing. Her co-defendant and boyfriend, reputed gang member George Carter Jr., 30, is scheduled to go on trial Jan. 17 on first-degree murder charges. Carter is accused of being the gunman in the slayings.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Larry Walls said the fatal shootings occurred a day after Welch and her daughter became involved in an argument with members of the Salvador Saucedo family. The next day, April 17, 1988, Welch led Carter to the Saucedo home, which was sprayed with 22 rounds from an AK-47 assault rifle. Killed were Saucedo, 39, and his daughter, Irma, 6.
