NEW YORK — U.S. authorities spirited a suspected drug trafficker from Bogota to New York today, where he is to be indicted on narcotics charges, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Nelson Cuevas Ramirez, 55, the 10th Colombian to be extradited to the United States since Colombian President Virgilio Barco Vargas began his campaign against drug trafficking in August, is to be arraigned before a U.S. magistrate later in the day.
Ramirez is the first accused trafficker extradited since a bombing killed dozens of people in front of the Colombian national police headquarters last week. The bombing was one of scores in recent months attributed to drug cartels, which are waging a violent campaign of intimidation against the extraditions.
