Medfly Found in Compton; Aerial Spraying Ordered
A pregnant Mediterranean fruit fly was found Friday in Compton, prompting officials to order multiple aerial spraying of the pesticide malathion over that community.
The fly was found about three miles west of a Medfly discovery in South Gate, broadening the boundaries of the escalating infestation. Officials said exact spray dates and new spray zone locations will be announced within a week. Compton residents will receive notice of the first spray affecting their homes.
Over the next five months, more than 250 miles of largely residential neighborhoods will be sprayed at least 12 times with malathion in an aggressive attempt to eradicate the crop-destroying pest.
