2 Longtime Activists to Lead Kwanzaa Parade
Two veteran black community activists were named Thursday to lead a parade that will be the centerpiece of an African-American cultural festival in South Los Angeles. Celes King II and Arlillian Moody will be king and queen of the 13th annual Kwanzaa Parade on Dec. 30, event organizers said.
King, 67, is a bail bondsman who secured the release of more than 5,000 people arrested and jailed in the South for civil rights work in the 1960s, said parade planners. He now is a California leader of the Congress for Racial Equality.
Moody, 75, is owner of a West Adams-area social center and has assisted hundreds of homeless and other disadvantaged people in recent years.
The parade will begin at 11 a.m. and run along Crenshaw Boulevard between Adams Boulevard and Leimert Park, said Yuseff Majahliwa, one of the organizers.
