At 17, the first year she was eligible, Saugus High School senior Sheri Massey proudly signed up for the school’s fall blood donor drive.

But her schoolmates found themselves donating blood for her instead, after she was injured in a traffic accident on her way to donate.

Warned that donors should eat a healthy meal before giving blood early in the morning, she agreed to meet two friends Wednesday morning for breakfast.

Massey called Heather Plack shortly before 6 a.m. to say she would soon leave her home in Castaic to pick up Plack in Valencia.

Massey never arrived.

She suffered multiple fractures and head injuries when, for unknown reasons, her car veered and collided head-on with a van on Newhall Ranch Road.

Sheriff’s deputies said it took 40 minutes to free her from the wreckage.

The van’s driver was treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Community Hospital and released Wednesday.

Massey remained in critical but stable condition Friday at Henry Mayo Newhall and was scheduled to undergo surgery for a broken left leg today. Ann Ingram, a hospital spokeswoman, said Massey had received 11 pints of blood.

On Friday, students at Saugus High circulated two large get-well cards on campus, covering them with best wishes and words of encouragement.

Others asked that the blood they donated during the school blood drive be earmarked for their friend.

Ironically, Plack and Mindy Winston--the two friends who were to join Massey for breakfast Wednesday--have yet to give blood. They haven’t had time, Plack said. They’ve been at the hospital, comforting the family of their friend.
