Panel Accepts City Gates Art Advice

The city’s Commission for Arts and Culture accepted the recommendations Friday of its Art in Public Places committee concerning the proposals for the City Gates project.

Earlier last week the committee accepted the recommendations of the jury that chose Ellen Phillips’ “Light Passage” for the North gate site--at the intersection of Interstate 5 and Ardath Road--and “Los Portales de Chicano Park” (The Entries of Chicano Park), by Robin Brailsford, Ysela Chacon and Roberto Salas, for the South Gate site at Interstate 5 and the Coronado Bay Bridge.

The commission voted unanimously to accept the committee’s recommendations and the proposals will be forwarded to the City Council for final approval. However, the commission must still secure funding for the projects, which each have a $100,000 construction budget and a $12,000 honorarium for the artists.
