Eastern Bloc and Gorbachev

Much is made of all the glorious actions by Gorbachev, and there are complaints that President Bush is doing nothing of great newsworthy value.

All that Gorbachev has done is to “free” some of the people that the Soviet Union has enslaved over the last 50 years. It was impossible for Bush to “free” the millions of people enslaved in Eastern Europe, after all the United States government wasn’t the one who had imprisoned them in the first place.

I have visited the Eastern European countries many times, so while I am thrilled that Gorbachev has permitted this change, it’s not as if he did something “above the call of duty.” He just did what should never have been necessary in the first place.
