PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia —
Communist Prime Minister Marian Calfa urged the Parliament today to elect playwright Vaclav Havel as president, giving a dramatic boost to the candidacy of the former political prisoner. “There is no alternative to Vaclav Havel,” Calfa told a joint session of the Federal Assembly, adding that the longtime human rights activist should be sent to the presidential mansion before the end of the year.
