Claremont : Ex-Mayor Back on Council
Former Mayor Richard Newton has been appointed to the City Council to fill a seat vacated by the death of Mayor Alex Hughes on Dec. 4.
Newton, technical manager for aerospace programs at Aerojet Electrosystems in Azusa, was appointed last week to serve until the April municipal elections. Newton, who has lived in Claremont since 1968, was on the council from 1975 to 1980, including two years as mayor. More recently, Newton served as a member of the citizens advisory committee that was formed to examine the need for an assessment district to increase city revenue.
