Compton : Oil Recycling Firm Fined for Fouling Air by School

Share

A Compton oil recycling firm agreed Tuesday to pay $2,300 in fines and penalties as a result of complaints from students and staff at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School on E. 133rd Street that they suffered nausea, headaches and sore throats because of noxious fumes.

The firm, Dermenno-Kerdoon, at 2000 N. Alameda St., which is about a block away from the school, pleaded no contest in Compton Municipal Court to misdemeanor charges that it contaminated the air on Nov. 7, 1988, and again on Sept. 12 this year, Deputy Dist. Atty. William W. Carter said.

Charges were filed against the firm by the district attorney, Carter said, after investigators from the South Coast Air Quality Management District determined that the fumes came from Dermenno-Kerdoon. School officials had reported the fumes to the air quality district.
