Polliwog Park Limited to Migratory Water Fowl

Despite the pleas of domestic duck lovers, the Manhattan Beach City Council voted Tuesday night to allow only migratory water fowl to stay in the city’s Polliwog Park.

Polliwog Park was home to more than 85 tame birds and ducks before Los Angeles County animal control officers removed and destroyed them earlier this year during a rebuilding of the pond.

The destruction of the domestic fowl provoked an outcry in the community, where many residents said they had enjoyed feeding and watching the ducks. But city officials said the tame ducks overwhelmed the pond’s ecosystem and Polliwog Park would be limited to a habitat for migratory water fowl passing through Southern California.
