Central America and East Bloc

Share

The dark night of communism is dissipating in Eastern Europe as the sunlight of freedom shines through. Why? Because Mikhail Gorbachev announced that his erstwhile satellites were on their own and there would be no Soviet tanks to prop up the hard-liners.

What if President Bush got this message from his new Malta buddy and cut off the $1.4 million a day to the death squad government of El Salvador? Perhaps Cristiani “democracy” leaders would suddenly realize that they were now alone with their supply of weapons and advisers shut off, facing the wrath of the majority of their citizens.

Perhaps, then, we might find a willingness to negotiate with the guerrillas, to stop the killings. Are Central Americans so different from Central Europeans?
