CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SAN FRANCISCO : $10 Million Added for Quake Relief

The American Red Cross, which has assisted about 14,000 people in the wake of a major Northern California earthquake Oct. 17, announced an additional $10 million fund to help address special housing needs. A nine-member committee will work with public and private organizations to help house those displaced by the earthquake when government funds or other financial aid is unavailable, the Red Cross said in San Francisco. Sue Richter, vice president and general manager of Red Cross Western operations, said $27.8 million was raised in Northern California for disaster services in a fund drive that began Sept. 23. The $10 million represents funds donated but not yet used, she said.
