The center draw span on the milelong Evergreen Floating Point Bridge was inadvertently raised more than 4 feet during a foggy morning rush hour today, causing multiple accidents that left one woman dead and at least seven people seriously injured.

In thick fog, the 100-foot movable section of the concrete bridge, which spans Lake Washington between Seattle and Bellevue, rose 4 1/2 feet without warning, causing a seven-car accident, the Washington State Patrol said.

A 48-year-old woman died at the scene and at least seven people were injured, some seriously. Despite early fears that cars might have been thrown into the lake by the sudden rise of the draw span, officials said no cars fell into the water.
