Animal Activists Are Criticized for Ignoring Constitutional and Environmental Realities
The story about furriers claimed that fur sales had leveled off in the past few years at $1.8 billion while the actual number of fur items sold was on the increase. Where did the reporter get this information? Did she just call the local furriers and ask: “How’s business?”
The reason for the decrease in price per pelt was not a “glut in the marketplace,” as the reporter claimed, but rather from the huge surplus of pelts left over from the ‘88-’89 season.
Major fashion magazines these past few months have touted “fake fur” as the look of the ‘90s, with several designers admitting that they had given up real fur because of pangs of bad conscience.
Certainly all of this is having an effect on an industry that is pumping $148 million (up from $110 million in 1987) into promotion, $9 million of which is budgeted specifically to counter the anti-fur protests.
