Romania’s National Bank has asked banks around the world to freeze any of the reported $1 billion in assets that executed dictator Nicolae Ceausescu or his family members may have deposited with them.

Swiss Justice Ministry spokesman Joerg Kistler confirmed today that the Swiss National Bank was among central banks that received the request by telex Monday.

The message, written in English, asked all central banks to call upon commercial banks to block funds deposited by Ceausescu, his family, or associates, and not to allow changes in such accounts.
