Radioactive Waste Disposal Application to be Reviewed

A unit of American Ecology Corp. of Agoura Hills said it moved a step closer toward establishing a low-level radioactive waste disposal site in the southeastern California desert.

US Ecology said the state Department of Health Services found that the company’s application for a license to develop and operate the facility was complete. That means the proposal will now undergo a technical review by the agency, a process that could take a year, the company said.

US Ecology has proposed putting the site in the Ward Valley about 25 miles west of Needles, which is along the California-Arizona border. The company said its site would be the first new low-level radioactive waste disposal site to be licensed in the United States in nearly 30 years.
