NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Body Recovered in Collapsed Garage
Rescue crews using hand tools, a bulldozer and a steam shovel recovered the body of a demolition worker from the rubble of a collapsed seven-story parking garage. One wing of the downtown structure collapsed Sunday while being demolished and worker Basilio Barrios, 36, of suburban Silver Spring, Md., was pinned beneath at least 10 tons of concrete, fire officials said. Authorities said two workers escaped on their own and a third was freed a short time later by firefighters. The workers said they were doing routine demolition work on the second floor when the structure collapsed without warning. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
