From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

For the second year running, Princess Anne topped her mother, Queen Elizabeth II, as the hardest working member of Britain’s royal family, according to a score card published today.

Anne, 39, who separated from her husband, Mark Phillips, in August, fulfilled 737 official engagements in 1989 in Britain and abroad for a wide variety of public and private groups. She is widely admired for her work for the international Save the Children Fund.

The figures are tallied annually from the Times of London’s daily Court Circular by London insurance broker Tim O’Donovan whose hobby is keeping track of royal engagements.

The queen finished in second place with 592 engagements. She was followed by her husband, Prince Phillip, who attended 569 public engagements.

The Duchess of York, the wife of Prince Andrew, has come under criticism for not performing enough official duties, but O’Donovan’s list shows she quadrupled her workload last year with 200 engagements in Britain, compared with 55 in 1988. The duchess attended 127 further public engagements abroad.
