A San Diego man was indicted Wednesday on two counts stemming from the delivery by sea of 14,000 pounds pounds of marijuana to Santa Barbara, a federal prosecutor said.

Britt Lance Reynolds, 36, was captain of the fishing vessel Rae Ann, which carried the marijuana from Hawaii in October, 1987, Assistant U.S. Atty. Pat Swan said in a statement. Reynolds, arrested Dec. 21 in San Diego, was charged with conspiring to import marijuana and to possess marijuana with the intent to distribute it.

If convicted, Reynolds could be sentenced to life in prison and fined $4 million on each count, Swan said.

Reynolds’ home, the 47-foot sailboat Kaihala, has been seized by federal Drug Enforcement Administration officers because they believe Reynolds used drug-related proceeds to finance and make “major improvements” to the boat, Swan said.

Reynolds is being held without bail pending a hearing today, Swan said.
