TENNIS ROUNDUP : Arias Overcomes Volkov, Advances in Australia

Jimmy Arias of Jericho, N.Y., defeated fourth-seeded Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), to advance to the quarterfinal round of the $150,000 Australian Hardcourt tennis championships Wednesday at Adelaide.

No. 6 Mark Koevermans of the Netherlands and unseeded Jerome Potier and Jean Fleurian of France also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Koevermans beat Patrick Kuhnen of West Germany, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, and Fleurian beat Udo Riglewski of West Germany, 6-3, 6-4. Potier upset No. 8 Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 6-4, 6-4.

Top seeds Emilio Sanchez of Spain and Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union advanced to the quarterfinals of the $150,000 BP Nationals championship at Wellington, New Zealand. Sanchez defeated Lars Jonsson of Sweden, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Chesnokov edged Thomas Hogstedt of Sweden, 7-6, 7-6.

Second-seeded Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia advanced to the quarterfinals of the $150,000 Queensland Open championship at Brisbane, Australia with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Michelle Jaggard of Australia.

Japanese teen-ager Kimiko Date also advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Terry Phelps of Larchmont, N.Y., 6-1, 6-2.
