Four Not Offered Padre Contracts
The Padres have decided not to send contracts to their four minor leaguers who are eligible for free agency, said Tom Romenesko, director of player development.
Those not receiving contracts are: pitcher Billy Taylor, 7-4, 5.13 ERA; outfielder Paul Runge, .253, six homers, 50 RBIs; catcher Jeff Hearron, .203, four homers, 25 RBIs, and shortstop/second baseman Billy Wrona, .223, three homers, 33 RBIs. Wrona has been invited to stay in the organization as a player/coach, Romenesko said, but he first would like to explore his options to continue as a full-time player.
BASKETBALL
Former San Diego State center Mitch McMullen was waived by the Santa Barbara Islanders of the Continental Basketball Assn. McMullen was the final cut by the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks during training camp last fall.
Julie Evans scored 30 points, but that was one of the few bright spots for San Diego State as the Aztecs lost to Northern Illinois University, 99-79, in a nonconference game at Peterson Gym. NIU’s Tammy Hinchee was the game’s high-scorer with 35 points. SDSU (1-10) play ninth-ranked Cal State Long Beach Saturday at 5:15 in the San Diego Sports Arena.
Carrie Carambas scored a game-high 22 points, but Point Loma Nazarene lost a nonconference game to visiting Lake Forest (Ill.), 68-66. Shannon Abrams (18) was the only other USD player in double figures. PLNC is 5-5, Lake Forest 9-0.
