McClure Won’t Seek Reelection to Senate
Sen. James A. McClure (R-Ida.) said Friday that he will not seek reelection in November and will leave the Senate when his term expires at the end of 1990.
“After all of the reflection about what the job is and what there is to be done--and there is much yet to be done on the national agenda--it’s my decision I will not be a candidate for reelection,” he said.
McClure, 65, is entering his 18th year in the Senate. He is the ranking Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and he has been a consistent opponent of conservation and mining reform measures that would restrict commercial use of public lands in the West.
McClure, who was co-chairman of George Bush’s 1988 presidential campaign, said that he has not decided what he will do after leaving office.
