COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Payton Scores 36 to Lead Beavers to Overtime Win

Gary Payton scored 36 points and Earl Martin made two free throws with 11 seconds left in overtime as No. 23 Oregon State defeated Stanford, 77-76, Friday night in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Stanford.

After Martin’s two free throws, Stanford’s John Patrick came right back with a three-point basket with five seconds left to pull Stanford within one point, but Oregon State managed to run out the clock.

It was Stanford’s first loss at home after 18 consecutive victories.

Patrick scored 18 points and made six of seven three-point shots to lead Stanford, which is 8-2 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-10.

Martin finished with 16 for the Beavers (10-2, 3-0).

California 95, Oregon 72--Guard Ryan Drew scored 23 points and Keith Smith added 20 to lead the Bears (10-3, 1-1) at Berkeley.

Richard Lucas led the Ducks (7-5, 2-1) with 18 points and 17 rebounds.

Seton Hall 76, St. Peter’s 57--The Pirates (8-3) took command with a 12-2 run at the start of this game at East Rutherford, N.J. Terry Dehere, a freshman guard, scored 20 points to lead Seton Hall.
