THAT HURTS! Authorities here are watching closely as a nationwide controversy rages over police use of “pain compliance” to quell protesters (A1). . . . Most 1989 abortion protests here weren’t as violent as those in Los Angeles. In Cypress, for instance, protesters went limp and cops simply carted them off. . . . Said Santa Ana Lt. Earl Porter: “It would be our policy to remove (the protesters) in the least harmful manner . . . and using only the degree of force that the circumstances require.”
