NATION : Pa. Abortion Law Put on Hold

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A federal judge issued an order today temporarily blocking most of the provisions of Pennsylvania’s new abortion control law--the toughest in the nation--from going into effect, a spokeswoman for the American Civil Liberties Union said.
U.S. District Judge Daniel Huyett in Reading issued the injunction after the ACLU filed a complaint challenging the Abortion Control Act of 1989, which was to go into effect Tuesday, ACLU spokeswoman Ariadne Valsamis said.
The injunction covers most of the provisions of the new law, including provisions requiring spousal notification, a 24-hour waiting period and informed consent, Valsamis said.
“We’re ecstatic,” she said.
