Jacob Burney, who coached the defensive line at the University of Wisconsin last year, has joined the UCLA football staff in the same capacity, the school said today.

Burney coached the inside linebackers at Mississippi State in 1988 and took a job at the University of South Carolina in January, 1989. A month later, after the death of head coach Joe Morrison, Burney joined the Wisconsin staff.

Burney was a four-year starter in the defensive line at Tennessee-Chattanooga, from which he graduated in 1981. He began his coaching career at New Mexico in 1983, where he coached the defensive line for four years.
