Peruvian Rebels Kill 6 Soldiers in Ambush
Leftist guerrillas ambushed an army camp in Peru’s chief cocaine-producing region Wednesday night, killing six soldiers and wounding two others, the army said Friday.
The ambush added to a series of attacks by anti-government guerrillas this week that have killed at least 19 people, including former Defense Minister Enrique Lopez, who was assassinated by guerrillas in Lima on Tuesday.
A guerrilla column attacked the camp as soldiers slept near the town of Tocache, in the Upper Huallaga River valley about 300 miles north of Lima, an army statement said. The army identified the attackers as members of Sendero Luminoso, or Shining Path.
