California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Smoked Fish Is Found Tainted
State health officials have recalled packages of one brand of smoked sardines and smoked mackerel that have been found to be contaminated, state health Director Kenneth W. Kizer said. Testing showed that hermetically sealed, plastic pouches of “Lorna’s Smoked Sardines” and “Lorna’s Smoked Mackerel” contained histamine, a substance that indicates partial spoilage. Kizer said the contaminated fish, which were distributed through several Filipino markets in Southern California, could cause a form of food poisoning that triggers headaches, hives and other skin rashes.
