Jarvi to Direct Detroit Symphony: Neeme Jarvi, an Estonian emigre who is principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony in Sweden, will replace Gunther Herbig as director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, according to Rachelle Schlosser, a spokeswoman from Jarvi’s record label, Koch International. Schlosser said Jarvi will take the place of Herbig, who plans to leave for the Toronto Symphony when his contract expires in September. Detroit Symphony spokeswoman Mary Loiselle declined to confirm or deny the appointment. Herbig has been in Detroit since 1984. Jarvi, 52, was scheduled to be guest conductor in Detroit for two weeks starting Jan. 26. He has held the guest baton there several times.
