Philippines Opposes Less Aid So U.S. Can Help Eastern Bloc
The United States should consider reducing its standard of living to meet its foreign aid pledges to allies including the Philippines, Foreign Secretary Raul Manglapus said today.
He blasted a proposal by Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole of Kansas for 5% cuts in U.S. aid to Israel, Egypt, the Philippines, Turkey and Pakistan to enable Washington to help the new democracies in Eastern Europe and Panama.
“The U.S. should rearrange its domestic priorities which may result in, maybe, some lowering of standards in some areas of American life, I mean maybe welfare . . . public works,” Manglapus told a news conference.
The Philippines, where the United States has two major military bases and four smaller installations, cannot accept arguments that American aid to some countries should be reduced for the sake of others, Manglapus said.
