Silver Ending Wins Easily in El Camino Real Derby

Silver Ending, purchased for only $1,500 by trainer Ron McAnally, may have an appointment in the Kentucky Derby after scoring an impressive three-length victory in Sunday’s Grade III $300,000 El Camino Real Derby at Bay Meadows.

“Not bad for a $1,500 yearling,” said McAnally after Silver Ending’s victory in the El Camino, the first major 1990 test on the West Coast for 3-year-olds. “Now, I guess we’ll look toward the Triple Crown and try to map out a schedule.”

A Derby Day crowd of 23,051, the third largest attendance in Bay Meadows history, watched Silver Ending scoot along the rail and overtake Individualist in the final sixteenth to secure the winner’s purse of $165,000.

Ridden by Gary Stevens, Silver Ending saved ground on the rail around the far turn and then had to wait for an opening down the stretch. When Stevens found a little room, Silver Ending exploded along the rail to win going away.
