Corporate Research Spending Falls: For the first time in 14 years, corporate spending on research and development did not keep pace with inflation last year, according to a story in the New York Times. Figures to be released within a week by the National Science Foundation show that U.S. corporations spent $68.8 billion on research and development in 1989, compared to $66.5 billion in 1988, according to the story. When adjusted for inflation, the 1989 spending total represented a decline of 0.9% from the previous year, the newspaper said.
