WORLD : U.S. Official Killed in Panama
A senior American official of the Panama Canal Commission was shot and fatally wounded during what appeared to be a robbery by two men at his home Tuesday night, a commission spokeswoman said today.
William J. Joyce, 56, the chief financial officer for the commission, was shot by men who persuaded Joyce’s wife, Mildred, to open the door of their home by mentioning the name of one of the couple’s sons, said commission spokeswoman Willie Friar.
Friar said at that point, “one of the two intruders opened fire immediately on the unarmed Joyce.”
The intruders robbed Joyce’s wife of jewelry and took guns from the family’s collection, Friar said.
