P.M. BRIEFING : Matsushita Plans Vast Tex. Plant

Japan’s largest electronics company will build a huge manufacturing complex in the Ft. Worth area, it was reported today.

The Dallas Morning News quoted industry and trade sources as saying Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., maker of Panasonic electronic products, has narrowed its choices for the plant location to sites in Tarrant or Denton counties near Ft. Worth’s new Alliance Airport.

The area is near where Tandy Corp. has a factory that builds personal computers sold under both the Tandy and Panasonic brands.

The report said a Japanese industrial newspaper also reported that Matsushita will choose one of three sites in the city of Ft. Worth for the plant.

Wednesday’s edition of Nipon Keizai Sanyo Shimbun said the company plans to build its own town, including a corporate campus with a group of factories and research and development facilities, housing for its employees and an athletic center.
