Flo-ing Lines: Florence Griffith Joyner, the Olympic sprint champion of wildly painted long fingernail fame, unveiled her designs Wednesday for new uniforms for the Indiana Pacers basketball team. “I’m very pleased with the way (they) turned out. . . . I didn’t want (them) to look too flashy.” Her creations are dark blue with gold trim and colored triangles down one side.

Burning Issue: Civil libertarians in Nashville, Tenn., were outraged Wednesday by a proposed law setting a maximum fine of $1 for beating anyone who burns an American flag in the state. If surviving spouses or parents of those killed in wars “beat the heck out of someone who burns the flag, so be it,” said the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Shelby Rhinehart. “It’s an invitation to violence,” said Barry Friedman, head of the state’s American Civil Liberties Union chapter.

Rockers Roll: Now that Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band is in abeyance, saxophonist Clarence Clemons is hitting the road with his own band, the Red Bank Rockers. “I didn’t get to play as much as I wanted on the last few E Street tours, and I knew the only way to make it happen was to do it on my own,” he said.

Name It, Claim It: Ron Howard is facing off against Charles Bronson in a bid to become the next Florida agriculture commissioner. But these guys are no actors. Howard, a Palm Beach County commissioner, and Bronson, a Brevard County rancher, entered the race this month. Howard, the actor, played Opie on the “Andy Griffith Show.” Bronson, the actor, played a tough in the 1974 film “Death Wish.” Capital wags dubbed the contest “Opie Meets Death Wish.”
