Mountain Storm Starts Out Last, Ends Up in First

Mountain Storm rallied to beat favored Rolling Donut by a neck in the $37,000 allowance feature for older horses Thursday at Santa Anita.

Mountain Storm was last early in the race but gradually moved up along the rail down the backstretch. He moved into third at the top of the stretch, angled outside pacesetters Rolling Donut and Joy Maker and took the lead in the final yards. Joy Maker was another three-quarters length back in third. First place was worth $20,350.

Ridden by Alex Solis under 115 pounds, Mountain Storm covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43 4/5.

Sent off as the second choice of the crowd of 13,554, the 4-year-old gelding returned $8, $4 and $3. Rolling Donut, with Chris McCarron and 119, paid $3.40 and $2.60. Joy Maker, under Corey Nakatani and low weight of 112, paid $4.60.

Mountain Storm, trained by Eddie Gregson for owner-breeder North Ridge Farm of Lexington, Ky., won his second race in 12 starts.
