A smooth-talking man who passed himself off as a San Diego attorney pleaded guilty Friday to grand theft in connection with his acceptance of legal fees from unsuspecting clients.

Steven Kurt Dony, 30, will be sentenced Feb. 21 and could receive a maximum of five years and four months in state prison.

A preliminary hearing had been scheduled for Friday, but Dony on Wednesday pleaded guilty to two counts of grand theft and one count of filling out a false credit application before Municipal Judge Frank Brown.

Dony, who has lived in San Diego several months, used the name of Phoenix attorney Curtis Ullman, who is licensed to practice in California but does not have an office here. Ullman said he did not know Dony, who remains in County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
