From Times staff and Wire reports

Activists say they have collected enough signatures to place an initiative on the June ballot that would attempt to ban nuclear weapons research and production in Alameda County. The Alameda County Nuclear Free Zone Coalition has presented an estimated 58,000 signatures to election officials. If 38,000 are valid, voters will be asked to decide whether nuclear weapons work should cease at U.S. Navy facilities and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
