From Times Wire Services

Soviet Union has assured the United States that any new helicopters supplied to Nicaragua will not be outfitted with weapons or used for military purposes, Secretary of State James A. Baker III said today.

“For the time being, we must, I think, take their assurance at face value,” Baker said. “But it is important that the assurance prove to be correct.”

Baker was commenting on reports that a Soviet freighter passed through the Panama Canal last week with a shipment of six MI-17 troop transport helicopters bound for the Pacific coast of Nicaragua.
