Gannett Co.: The Washington communications company said net income in 1989 totaled $397.5 million, up 9% from 1988. Revenue rose 6% to $3.5 billion. The company said its 1989 fiscal year contained 53 weeks, while the 1988 year had 52 weeks. The company said the latest results reflected a gain on the sale of the New Mexican in Santa Fe, N.M., which was offset by operating losses from the ill-fated television show “USA Today on TV.” Advertising revenue at its flagship newspaper, USA Today, rose 13%. Gannett did not break out earnings results from the newspaper, but spokeswoman Sheila Gibbons said it had a loss.
