Armored Truck’s Cash Deposit Creates a Furor on the Freeway

Cash and personal checks were grabbed by motorists when a bag containing an undisclosed amount of currency mysteriously fell out the rear door of a Loomis Armored truck Wednesday.

The money fell as the northbound driver crossed the connector ramp from Interstate 15 to Interstate 805, said Laura Underwood-Cox, manager of Loomis Armored.

She would not reveal how much money was in the bag or the amount recovered, but said that less than $10,000 in cash and personal checks is still missing. The checks cannot be cashed because they are endorsed to the bank of a retailer, she said.

“This is just as much a mystery to me as it is to everyone else,” Underwood-Cox said. She said that Loomis has been in San Diego more than 50 years, and, to her knowledge, nothing similar ever occurred.

She said the maintenance crew is inspecting the truck to determine why the doors “just flew open.” The bag split as several motorists drove over it.

“As soon as it hit the pavement, money started flying, and people grabbed it, “she said.

Some of the money fell into a drainage ditch to the side of the ramp but was retrieved, the California Highway Patrol said. Anyone returning money will receive 10% of the amount, with no questions asked, she said.
