NAMES IN THE NEWS : Barbara Bush Praises Fonda
WASHINGTON — Jane Fonda, a longtime favorite target of conservative politicians, can count a Republican, Barbara Bush, among her admirers.
The First Lady praised the actress for her portrayal of a woman who teaches an adult illiterate in Fonda’s new movie, “Stanley & Iris.”
She felt it gives a good “depiction of the Laubach method” of teaching reading, says Mrs. Bush’s press secretary, Anna Perez.
Literacy is Mrs. Bush’s favorite cause. She frequently speaks on the topic and promotes pro-literacy groups.
Perez said the First Lady had the movie sent to the White House several weeks ago for a private viewing with some of her staff.
In the movie, Fonda teaches a brilliant inventor, played by Robert De Niro, to read.
